The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
