Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
